Introduction:

If you are seeing split ends, chances are your hair lacks moisture and feels dry, brittle. Chances are it lacks that healthy shine, and your washing routine might be the first culprit. I see this issue with nearly every client who sits in my chair. When I ask them about their washing routine, time and again, when we dig into their hair washing habits, it all boils down to improper washing techniques. But don’t worry—transforming your routine is easier than you think! Here are 4 simple hacks that can take your hair from dull to dazzling. ✨

8 Reasons

With that said, here are 4 simple hacks that can take your hair dull to dreamy ✨👊

1. Brush Before You Wash

Ever started shampooing only to end up with a tangled mess? 🪮 Brushing your hair before you hop into the shower prevents knots and tangles from turning into a full-blown bird’s nest. Not only does this save you time, but it also minimizes breakage during and after washing.

2. Shampoo Twice—Yes, Twice!

One round of shampoo just isn’t enough! During the first shampoo, you might notice you need a little more product. That’s because it’s working hard to lift oils and product buildup from your scalp. The second shampoo is where the magic happens. It gives your hair and scalp a deeper cleanse, leaving them refreshed and ready for conditioner. You must also find your shampoo bestie, which I will cover in another post!

💡 Pro Tip: Focus on scrubbing your scalp (nape, behind the ears, and crown). DO NOT scrub the mid-strands or ends unless you’re tackling heavy buildup like chlorine or hairspray.

3. Use the Right Tools for Your Conditioner

Conditioner and/or hair masks work best when they coat each strand of hair evenly. To achieve this:

  • Use a wet brush or wide-tooth comb to distribute the product through your hair.

  • Apply from the mid-lengths to ends—skip the scalp, especially if it tends to get oily.

Shampoo is alkaline in nature so it opens up the cuticle of the hair shaft. If you skip this step, you’re not balancing the pH level of your hair which adds moisture and seals up the cuticle! Let the product work its magic by ensuring every strand is coated.

4. Don’t Skip the Leave-In Conditioner

Think of leave-in conditioner as the moisturizer your hair desperately needs after washing. 💧 Apply it while your hair is damp and freshly blotted to lock in hydration and protect against environmental damage.

🌟 Bonus Tip: Choose a leave-in conditioner with heat protectant capabilities, even if you’re not using heat tools. My go-to is the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother, which offers hydration, heat protection, and frizz control—all in one bottle.

Why Your Washing Routine Matters

ThiYour hair deserves the same level of care and attention as your skin. Just as you wouldn’t skip moisturizer after a shower, your hair needs nourishment and protection to stay soft, shiny, and healthy. These small adjustments can make a big difference in the look and feel of your hair, especially during the colder months when dryness is more common.
